Merseysippi Jazz Band

A band that has been around since 1949 and has shared the stage with the great Louis Armstrong - must be worth a listen

Doors 7.30pm - Band On Stage 8.00pm

They made their first broadcast for the BBC in 1952 and their first commercial recording in 1954.
Their other claim to fame was opening the famous Cavern Club in Liverpool in 1957 where they held a residency for two years.
A Skiffle group named The Quarrymen led by one John Lennon also made its debut at The Cavern and eventually ousted the Trad bands – the rest is history.

Merseysippi continues to play at its resident venue in Liverpool. They have been there just about every Monday night since 1984. The countless musicians who have been pleased to guest with the band over the years reads like a 'Who's Who' of British Jazz. Just for example, Keith Nichols, Dave Mott, Roger Myerscough, Clinton Ford, Digby Fairweather the late Campbell Burnap, John McCormick, Dave Shepherd, Alan Barnes, Johnny Richardson, Mike Cotton, Roy Williams and Honorary Life Member of the Merseysippi Jazz Band, John Barnes.

It’s easy to see why the band was popular – they made more records for Esquire than any other Trad band – with their brand of good foot-stompin’ Trad and the big brassy sound of the two trumpet front-line.source
